Then, I explained to him what I was doing while I was doing it to help put the model at ease. My approach with the model also helped put the stylist at ease during the interviewed. As we moved through the haircut, I continued to reassure the model and explained what we were doing as we were doing it.
Halfway through the haircut, it was obvious the model began to relax and started to trust me because he saw that I was doing exactly what I said. My words matched my actions, which is key to building client trust. Three-quarters of the way through the haircut, the model was more interested in what was on the television than what the stylist and I were doing.
That reaction was exactly what I hoped for.
Taking the approach I did with this model, I gained his trust and it felt good. By the end of the haircut, the stylist being interviewed was very impressed by the cutting technique we use. Plus, the model could not stop raving this was the “best haircut I have ever had”. The model ended up saying yes to everything I suggested we do to his hair. The stylist also thanked me for showing him how I build trust with a client and for a haircutting method that delivers results.
Trust is so important in being a hairstylist. This experience reminded me that establishing trust with the client must happen first before any service begins. As a long-time hairstylist, I can sense when a client begins to trust me and recognize that I cannot take advantage of the opportunity the client has given me. Trust can also be lost. I realize as well that I must keep building trust during our professional relationship. When a stylist has built trust with a client and that client trusts the stylist, these are customers for life. These clients will do anything the stylist suggests. That level of trust is the ultimate TIP a stylist could get–a lifetime customer.
